I have very limited knowledge of the history of the Israel-Palestine region through the collapse of the Ottoman Empire until today and am trying to better understand the ongoing conflict. There is far too much “If you’re not with us you’re against us” in this world. I’m honestly trying to understand the situation. However, I know that following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, there were no boundaries in that region. It was all one entity that then had to figure out how to reorganize itself, at which point all the territory was claimed and divided up by European colonial nations with arbitrary borders. Just because some foreign country claimed authority over the area doesn’t render the true claim of local occupants (read Palestinians) any less legitimate and unless otherwise someone makes me understand how Israel is deserving of that land then this remains to be a terrorist act by Netanyahu against Palestine.
The Palestinians’ and Hamas’ animosity is from having their land given away by false authority to create a Jewish state. It’s no different than learning your step-dad is taking away your toys and bedroom to give to your step-brother and you are pushed to the store room.
The international community considers the establishment of Israeli settlements in the Israeli-occupied territories illegal under international law, however Israel maintains that they are consistent with international law because it does not agree that the Fourth Geneva Convention applies to the territories occupied in the 1967 Six-Day War.The United Nations Security Council, the United Nations General Assembly, the International Committee of the Red Cross, the International Court of Justice and the High Contracting Parties to the Convention have all affirmed that the Fourth Geneva Convention does apply. Numerous UN resolutions have stated that the building and existence of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights are a violation of international law, including UN Security Council resolutions in 1979 and 1980.
And for this I say #FreePalestine
